Tzu Chi’s revamped monthly eco activity is now back in action
After being suspended for 10 months due to COVID-19, Tzu Chi’s monthly environmental protection activity is now back with a new name and a new operating mode that emphasises on raising environmental awareness. Besides being renamed as Environmental Sustainability Day, the revamped version of eco activity will operate in a different way with preventive measures being part of its SOP. Moving on, residents are to participate in sorting their own recyclables and learn the right way of protecting the environment.

Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the monthly environmental protection activity which was suspended for 10 months is now back in operation with its site layout and people flow control strictly adhering to the safety measures.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Tay Chin Joo: It’s not easy to start all over again, because we need the approval from the Town Council and Residents’ Committee. When people arrive, we need them to do Safe Entry and maintain social distancing while queuing. Only one person is allowed to enter at a time to ensure no chance of cross infection.
Under the guidance of the volunteers, members of the public followed the arrow in sorting their recyclables. The new mode of operation not only complies with the safety measures, but it is also more educational.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Chua Wee Chong: This is different from the past. Before the pandemic, the residents would leave after dropping their recyclables. Now, residents have to sort their own recyclables. Hopefully this could bring some changes to their lives.
Member of the public, Yeo Tiong Hoe: At least I learned how to do sorting and which items can be recycled.
Member of the public, Christina Ong: I saw some people throwing away items which are still in good condition. It’s really a pity. This is a good lesson for me.
The monthly recycling activity is now known as “Environmental Sustainability Day”. It is hoped that this transition amid the pandemic will lead to a more sustainable eco practice.
